Challenge
Like many business schools, Emory University’s Goizueta Business School faced the challenge of preparing MBA students to become effective leaders in the workplace. While classroom instruction can provide strong academic and technical foundations, it is often less effective at developing the interpersonal awareness, adaptability, and emotional intelligence that leadership requires. Goizueta wanted a better way to help students understand themselves, relate more effectively to others, and build the practical leadership skills they would need after graduation.
Action
To address that need, Goizueta integrated The Birkman Method into its leadership development approach alongside traditional lectures and coursework. Students in the MBA program were introduced to Birkman at the very beginning of their experience through onboarding and then applied the insights throughout semester-long study teams. Using the Birkman, students developed a deeper understanding of their own behaviors, learned to recognize and manage stress responses, and gained greater awareness of how to work effectively with people with different styles and needs. The program also helped reinforce an important leadership principle: effective leaders do not simply treat others the way they want to be treated, but instead learn to understand and respond to what others need in order to perform at their best.
Result
Birkman became a meaningful part of leadership development at Goizueta and expanded well beyond its original use. What began as a way to support student growth evolved into a broader cultural asset across the university. Today, Goizueta has roughly a dozen Birkman-certified faculty and staff, and the use of Birkman has spread from MBA students to the wider university community. Every MBA student and undergraduate business student at Emory now completes The Birkman Method questionnaire, giving students a stronger leadership foundation and a competitive advantage as they prepare for their careers.
